- Theme - the statement about life that a writer is trying to get across in a piece of writing, in most cases the theme will be implied rather than spelled out
- Refrain - the repetition of a line or phrase of a poem at regular intervals especially at the end of each stanza
- Rhyme- the similarity or likeness of a sound existing between two words
- Narrator - is the person who's telling the story
- Suspense - the sense of growing fear, tension and excitement felt by the reader
